Not too long after its appearance, the XC40, subcompact premium crossover will continue its development. The Swedish company is going to launch an all-electric version of this vehicle by the end of the year. These are not just rumors since the carmaker officially confirmed the information. Further details are speculation since the company is silent about 2020 Volvo XC40 EV specs. All we know is that crossover is the first-ever electric model by Volvo. Also, the carmaker will continue with this project and add more EVs, By 2025, half of the sales should come from these vehicles.
Well, the 2020 Volvo XC40 EV is not the only new arrival we expect in this segment. Ford announced a plan to build a Mustang-based electric crossover. From premium class, similar stories are coming from Infiniti and Porsche. It will be interesting to see how the German carmaker is going to respond with its Taycan sports car. Of course, Tesla is already in the market, but the US company is not going after such a small vehicle. Jaguar i-Pace is offering a range of 250 miles and output of 400 horsepower.+
From Plug-In to EV
The subcompact crossover is one of the youngest models in the SUV segment. However, the XC40 develops fast and it had a PHEV version right after the release date. Now, it is time for a step forward and the all-electric version. The 2020 Volvo XC40 EV will be greener, but the cost of the development will increase the price. Also, its closest siblings are offering a plug-in hybrid version. But, there is no word about XC60 or XC90 EV models.
The XC40 PHEV is capable to deliver 260 hp. The system combines a 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor. This battery has a capacity of 9.7 kWh. Total torque is 315 lb-ft and the energy goes through a seven-speed automatic transmission. The PHEV model needs 7 seconds to sprint to 60 mph and the top speed of the XC40 plug-in hybrid is 130 mph. By using only the electric battery, the crossover can go 35 miles.

Although we still don’t know details, these numbers must go up. The 2020 Volvo XC40 EV will be more capable than the PHEV model. That means more power, torque, and range. The outputs will be around 300 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Electric model will take less time to sprint to 60 mph. What is more important is the range of the electric model. We believe the Volvo will aim at least 300 miles, or even more.
