The 2020 Toyota C-HR AWD is coming for the US market for the first time. We could see this subcompact crossover using only a 2WD system, and many buyers and fans were moaning about the all wheel drive version. Well, it is part of the lineup now. What does it also brings? Of course, Toyota C-HR AWD will consume slightly more fuel. However, the light crossover is still going to deliver high gas mileage ratings. Length and width of the C-HR will remain the same and there won’t be other big changes on this relatively fresh model.
A manual transmission is not going to be an option for the 2020 Toyota C-HR AWD. This version will only use an automatic gearbox. Sunroof will be standard for models with all wheel drive configuration. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also on the features list for the 2020 C-HR AWD. Toyota is adding these two services to its new Entune system. This infotainment set of features will enter the next generation in 2021.
2020 Toyota C-HR AWD Pros and Cons
Of course, the new 2020 Toyota C-HR AWD will gain more balance and stability. However, the downside of the all wheel drive system is higher mpg consumption. The Japanese company is not out yet with official specs, so we are not sure how many damages an AWD can do. Still, the C-HR is one of the most fuel-friendly compact crossovers with the gas mileage of 30 mpg combined. On the other hand, Toyota could include some advanced features for the all-wheel drive configuration to boost off-road driving skills. Well, do not expect TRD Pro or some similar suite. On the other hand, TRD Sport is definitely a cool possibility.
Specs
Under the bonnet of the 2020 Toyota C-HR AWD will lay the same drivetrain as for the FWD model. It is a four-cylinder 2.0-liter displacement with the capability to produce 145 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque. Definitely, these outputs can’t compete with more larger units, as well as these huge SUVs can’t offer gas mileage of the C-HR. Toyota cuts down the consumption to 30 mpg combined. Although it is a good return, some rivals can do it better. If you are looking for a more efficient ride, Honda HR-V and Nissan Rogue Sport are good alternatives. The CVT transmission is sending power to all wheels, and the AWD version of the 2020 Toyota C-HR will have a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds.
2020 Toyota C-HR AWD Configurations
The styling is making this subcompact crossover so special. It’s been a while since we could see so aggressive appearance. Sharp edges, low ride, cut rear end… well, everything on the C-HR is extraordinary. SO, designers did their job. Now, it is up to engineers to upgrade the crossover with all wheel drive. But, what kinds of configurations could be built with this setup?
The vehicle is available with LE, XLE, and Limited trim levels. The new 2020 Toyota C-HR AWD could add another one if the company decides to install more off-road features. That could be the new TRD Sport version. Until then, we believe the all wheel drive is not going to be available for an entry-level trim, but only XLE and Limited. The price of these versions will jump for around $2,000 with AWD added to the drivetrain system.
XLE model is coming with 18-inches wheels and numerous interior features. Safety is on a high level, with equipment such as Safety Sense, rear cross-traffic alert, and other driver aid systems included. Entune system is supporting Apple CarPlay again, while the Android Auto will be available for the first time. The leather steering wheel and dual-zone climate controls are standard.
All these features are going to be available for the 2020 Toyota C-HR AWD Limited model. Add leather seats and a sensor lock system. Outside, vortex rims and LED lamps for fog lights are further trimmings. Sunroof is going to be available for the Limited version.
2020 Toyota C-HR AWD Prices
The entry-level model of C-HR subcompact crossover costs just above $20,000. The MSRP of the XLE starts at $23k. For the all wheel drive configuration, we must spend at least $25,000. That is significantly higher than the base Honda HR-V AWD ($22,000) and Ford EcoSport AWD ($21,500). Still, the 2020 Toyota C-HR AWD XLE package will offer more features and options than its rivals. Top of the class Limited edition with all-wheel drive configuration will cost $28,000.
