The 2020 Range Rover Sport is slightly smaller than its close sibling with the similar name. It takes the position in the mid-size luxury segment. The new edition will launch an electric version with nearly 400 horsepower. After the facelift in 2017, this is somehow expected a mechanical update for this model. In the next 4 or 5 years, JLR will update its entire lineup. The current generation of the Range Rover Sport dates from 2013, so it is about time for a change. We can’t wait to see what will it bring. But, until the next-gen appears, we will see a few more updates. The first one is for next season.
Few things are certain about the 2020 Range Rover Sport. First of all, this is one of the most exclusive models in the mid-size segment. The price is a clear indicator of the luxury that expects buyers of this SUV. The new engine will be the seventh option for the Range Rover Sport. However, the vehicle is not gaining any space in the third row. But, besides that, we can’t complain about anything else about the SUV. Comfort, infotainment, performance… everything is unreal.
Changes For 2020
The most important change for the next season is coming under the hood. The new engine for the 2020 Range Rover Sport is an electric drivetrain. Well, the SUV already has a plug-in hybrid, but this one is taking the performance to the next level. Instead of producing 295 hp, the new unit can make 395 horsepower. The six-cylinder mill is a combination of V8 and other systems that will maximize the outputs. The new model is Range Rover Sport HST and it needs less than 6 seconds to sprint to 60 mph. The company also announced a downtuned version of this drivetrain that will deliver 355 hp. Sadly, they didn’t give us any clues about the pricing.
2020 Range Rover Sport Specs
A new six-cylinder engine is only one of seven choices buyers of the 2020 Range Rover Sport will have. The base drivetrain is a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 with 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. All drivetrains in the Range Rover Sport lineup are using an all-wheel drive and an eight-speed transmission. HSE Dynamic version of the SUV is going to squeeze more energy from the same engine (380 hp, 340 pound-feet).
Stepping up in the more serious outputs, we will find a 5.0-liter V8 unit. This one is again supercharged and bursts 520 hp for the Autobiography model. The engine also adds 460 lb-ft and its fuel economy drops under 20 mpg combined. It becomes even worse with the 2020 Range Rover Sport SVR model that will deliver 575 hp. Well, this incredible output is still not enough to beat Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk with the Hellcat unit and its 707 ponies. The SVR model also puts out 500 lb-ft.
Besides the two petrol engines in the squad, the 2020 Range Rover Sport will offer a hybrid configuration. Turbocharged four-cylinder engine is paired with an electric motor for nearly 400 hp. You will find this one as Range Rover Sport P400e. Besides the greener option, buyers of the SUV in the US will find a diesel version. A 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel unit bursts 450 pound-feet and 255 hp. This one can tow up to 7,700 pounds. It also returns 25 mpg combined.
Well, the new drivetrain choice is the major update for the upcoming 2020 Range Rover Sport. The facelift from 2017 is the last one we will see before the next generation steps on the market. The company plans it for 2022. Well, there is a schedule, and the first Range Rover is already here. It is a crossover SUV Evoque. The next one to arrive in 2020 is a pure-electric model. After that, we will see a full-size Range Rover in 2021. Logically, the next step is a new generation for its Sport mid-size version. The last one on the list is Range Rover Velar. This compact premium SUV is still fresh since it is launched a couple of years ago.
2020 Range Rover Sport Release Date, Price Range
The arrival of the 2020 Range Rover Sport is not expected this year. The company announced the new engine, but no bog premiere is on sight. Instead, the British carmaker will launch the Range Rover Sport SUV directly to salons. With so many engine options, the price will float between $70k and $145k. Well, this vehicle is one of the most expensive units in the class. Its high-end Autobiography, and especially SVR versions are on par with full-size premium models.
