2022 Mazda CX-50 – Hybrid Replacement for the CX-5

We doubt Mazda is going to replace its best-selling product, as some sources report. Instead, the 2022 Mazda CX-50 could get a hybrid drivetrain and complete the lineup. On the other hand, the new vehicle is still in the phase of registration, and we could see a delay in the production.

Meanwhile, the Japanese company is developing new units for new arrivals. SkyActiv technology is unique in the market. A 3.0-liter petrol unit will be the next step in the evolution of a 2.0 SkyActiv model. A diesel engine is also in development and does not be surprised if it arrives in the US.

Specifications of New Engines

So, we have a couple of new units on the way. Both could debut as soon as the 2022 Mazda CX-50 becomes official. Well, the company already did something with CX-30 and we expect the same modifications when CX-50 and CX-5 are compared.

A 3.0-liter petrol unit is enhanced with a mild-hybrid system. This is the straight-six engine that will be able to deliver between 280-320 horsepower, making the CX-5 and CX-50 competitive to Toyota Highlander and Ford Explorer.

The other unit is also interesting. Mazda is about to bring a 3.3-liter oil-burner. Again, the straight-six is based on the SkyActiv-D technology which makes diesel units cleaner. On the other hand, the SkyActiv-X improves fuel economy on gasoline systems by using some tricks from a diesel configuration.

Mazda filed for the registration of the new nameplate. We believe the company will obtain rights sooner or later. Meanwhile, the carmaker continues to develop new engines. So far, we haven’t seen test mules on streets. Well, the premiere is not expected before 2021, so designers and engineers have a lot of time to do everything right. The price of the 2022 Mazda CX-50 will be slightly higher compared to the CX-5. The replacement is less likely, even if the new crossover evolves.
