Mazda might not be the star of the Detroit Auto Show 2019. However, the Japanese company still managed to draw the attention with its mysterious announcement. When asked what their fans can expect in future, chiefs said a new model. It is happening in Geneva later this year, and the entire public is pretty sure we will see the 2020 Mazda CX-3. Well, it could be the time for a mid-cycle refresh, since the model is entering the third year of production. Next year will be four, and some models launch a new generation after such a period of time. But, that is not going to be the case with CX-3.
Facts: Current Mazda3 is the freshest model. It hasn’t been a year since we saw it for the first time. Something similar we can say for Mazda CX-5. After two years we can see only a minor facelift, not the big changes worthy of such an announcement. Mazda6 shares the story with Mazda3. MX-5 presented a new engine last year. If the company wanted to launch a new vehicle, it would save the turbo unit for the debut. Two vehicles that are still in the mix are 2020 Mazda CX-3 and Mazda2. But, the subcompact crossover segment is currently more popular than mini cars, and the CX-3 is a year older than the current version of Mazda2.
2020 Mazda CX-3 Restyling
Although Mazda was mysterious, there are some obvious details why they are restyling the subcompact crossover. First of all, it has been a while. The situation in the crossover segment does not allow carmakers to make big gaps without changes. So, it is definitely a time for a mid-cycle update. We’ve heard the company is developing the new model. According to official sources, the 2020 Mazda CX-3 will use the same platform as the Mazda3. It is fresh, versatile, and it will fit perfectly to the subcompact crossover.
What’s more, the interior of the current vehicle needed changes. Based on Mazda2, there is not too much room inside the vehicle. By using the same architecture as Mazda3, the 2020 Mazda CX-3 will gain extra length and passengers will be happy to get more space. Furthermore, there will be more room for other upgrades. To sum up – Mazda CX-3 2020 is definitely on the way.
2020 Mazda CX-3 to Debut in Geneva?
We already analyzed the possibility of 2020 Mazda CX-3 were the mysterious debut in March. The 89th Auto Show in Geneva takes place from March 7 to March 17. So, in less than two months we will find out if the CX-3 is the vehicle under Mazda’s spotlight there. Nevertheless, the crossover is not going straight to dealerships. It is about to happen later, probably in the fourth quarter of 2019.
Price, Configurations
Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trim levels are about to come back for the 2020 Mazda CX-3. The Japanese company could add one more configuration to refresh the lineup. The base crossover will cost $21,000 and it comes with front-wheel drive. To get AWD, buyers must add $1,500 for any trim level. A mid-range Touring costs $24,000 and top of the class model is Grand Touring. With the price of $28,000 it brings moonroof, LED lights, leather wheels, navigation, and many other accessories.
2020 Mazda CX-3 Specs
Under the bonnet of the 2020 Mazda CX-3 will be a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The drivetrain is getting a SkyActiv-X treatment to boost overall performance. The subcompact crossover gains 190 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque from the new system. The power goes through a six-speed automatic transmission that sends energy to front wheels by default. Buyers can pick an all-wheel drive for better balance and traction.
The 2020 Mazda CX-3 is going to be one of the most efficient models in the market. The base setup returns 34 mpg out on highways, and 30 mpg in the urban ride. Of course, AWD will consume more fuel, but the gas mileage drops only by 2 mpg for each section. Finally, the towing capacity of 2,000 pounds is quite impressive for the subcompact segment. That is more than Toyota C-HR and Honda HR-V, both offering a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 pounds.
Hybrid, Turbo Engines
The new 2020 Mazda CX-3 could also get a hybrid engine. Well, it is the direction where all companies are heading. Honda HR-V brought hybrid for the 2019 season. Well, it will enter the US market next year. Toyota C-HR and Subaru Crosstrek are already present in this segment. So, to be more competitive, Mazda must think forward. The CX-3 hybrid is a logical choice and we could see it already as an update for 2020 season model.
Besides that, we have a reason to believe that part of the 2020 Mazda CX-3 restyling will be the new engine. Turbocharged four-cylinder unit with upgraded power and torque would make a statement. Also, buyers would have more choices and options, which is also important when they come to dealerships. Well, stories about hybrid and turbo versions of the subcompact crossover are only speculations for now, but sooner or later Mazda will install them for the CX-3.
