A three-row SUV segment might not be the most popular one at the moment. However, the interest for these vehicles is raising, mainly because the companies are improving their offer. Three-row SUVs can offer everything smaller siblings can do. But, more seating places at no extra cost could be decisive for some buyers. Jeep is going this way. Their prototype of 3-row crossover is spied. We know a lot about it, except the name. The new three-row crossover SUV should be either Jeep Grand Wagoneer or Grand Commander.
Ok, so we have spy photos. But, what does it mean? First of all, it confirms rumors that Jeep is building a new crossover SUV. Second, it is in the advanced development stage since it is on streets already. So, we can expect the vehicle’s release date sooner than many thought.
Few things are still unclear. The name is the first mystery. We already discussed returns of Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Grand Commander in our story about 20 discontinued SUVs we want to see again. Both names are a possibility. However, only one of them will take a position above Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Jeep Grand Wagoneer or Grand Commander
We place our bets on Grand Commander. This crossover was modern and futuristic. Also, it had a 7-seat configuration in its offer. Furthermore, the company could bring back the famous cabin layout where passengers seats are standing higher than driver’s bucket.
On the other hand, Jeep Grand Wagoneer is one of the legendary vehicles. For 29 years this vehicle used the same platform. As one of the first crossover SUV on the market, Jeep could return it in new shape.
Jeep Three-Row crossover SUV Spied
There are no doubts we saw a new 3-row SUV Jeep mule. Interior design and exterior shapes are unveiling that. Experts already found similarities with Jeep Yuntu, so this is another nameplate option. Whatsoever, the SUV debuted in China. Appearance in this part of the world is not impossible though.
Powertrain Specifications
Sharp lenses of spy photographers caught few details that could unveil what to expect under the hood. Test mule carried a heavy camo. Even the Jeep badge on the steering wheel was covered. But, clusters were visible. There, we could see gauges with redline above 5,500 rpm. Checking similarities and voila – the same redline we find on Wrangler and Cherokee.
Both models are using four-cylinder drivetrains. The next Jeep Grand Wagoneer or Grand Commander 3-row crossover could get either 2.0-l or 2.4-liter displacement. Transmission and drive modes are unknown at this moment. However, the new SUV will use either 8- or 9-speed auto gearbox. It will route power probably to front wheels, while all-wheel drive remains automatic.
Jeep Grand Wagoneer or Grand Commander Release Date
Fans can expect the new three-row mid-size SUV during the second half of 2018. However, we still don’t know when it will officially come to dealerships. Also, we are waiting for official info which should resolve our doubts if either Jeep Grand Wagoneer or Grand Commander is going to be 2019 or 2020 year model.
