With Jeep’s return to the truck segment with the new Gladiator, we could have clues in which direction the company is going to develop next Wrangler. These two vehicles are close siblings. The truck is based on a 4×4 SUV. So, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler will definitely borrow some design cues from its fresh stablemate. As always, the vehicle is an open-air, 4×4 model, with 2- and 4-door layout, available with diesel and petrol engines. Wrangler belongs to a mid-size class.
For the upcoming model, we will see changes that will make the 2020 Jeep Wrangler more similar to the new truck. Well, the SUV is still fresh, since the last JL generation was launched in 2018. It served as the base for the Gladiator. However, small updates of the infotainment system and possibly new colors are part of the modernization every new season is bringing. Besides that, the 4×4 vehicle remains unchanged.
2020 Jeep Wrangler Specs
Two engines are going to be part of the new lineup. The base configuration includes a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, capable to produce 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The system comes with a turbocharger and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The other solution is a 3.6-liter V6. Famous Pentastar engine is using either six- or eight-speed gearbox as a power router. Both engines are sending power to all wheels. A V6 can develop 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The maximum towing capacity of the 4×4 SUV is 3,500 pounds, no matter which engine you choose.
Diesel
We already mentioned the relation between 2020 Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator. Well, the truck is getting a diesel engine. It is the same unit we will see under the hood of the Ram 1500 full-size truck. If Gladiator can have it, so can Wrangler. A 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine is producing 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The arrival of the new unit would double towing capacity figures. Also, the fuel economy will be better. Currently, a four-cylinder mill returns 23-24 mpg combined, while the Pentastar engine can do 20-21 mpg.
Plug-In Hybrid
While its stablemate from the pickup class is after high outputs and towing capacity increase, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler could get a greener option. The plug-in hybrid engines are becoming a part of the mid-size SUV segment. Well, the 4×4 vehicle needs good performances, not fuel economy. Adventurers are looking for an SUV that can solve all off-road obstacles, and they don’t save money for it. However, Wrangler is also performing good on the road, so it not going to be a surprise to see it with the PHEV system. On the other hand, the company said nothing about this one. Everything is still a speculation.
2020 Jeep Wrangler Models
There will be two types of the SUV – 2020 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited. The first one is a two-door vehicle, while the other one is coming with a 4-door layout. The Unlimited version is also larger and offers more space for passengers and cargo. Besides that, the design and trim options are the same, as well as the optional packages for the SUV. Of course, larger vehicle costs more.
Whatsoever, both 4×4 models are coming with the Sport package as the base one. Uconnect 3 and soft top are standard. Outside, there are 17-inch wheels. Sport S adds heated exterior mirrors with the power adjusting system. Infotainment is upgraded to Uconnect 4 with 7-inch display and Apple CarPlay. Sahara model increase wheel size to 18 inches. Also, this one is available only with 4 doors. It is capable for an off-road drive thanks to the Command-Trac 2-speed 4×4 system. The 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon upgrades it to Rock-Trac 4:1 low range 4×4. All-terrain tires, HD axles, Tru-Lok Locking Differentials, and few other upgrades will make this model more capable for a drive while in tough situations.
Depending on a trim level, buyers can always pick suitable upgrades for their Wrangler. That is the segment where we will see the most changes for the 2020 season model. The evolution of technology requires updates every year. So, we could see the new packages besides the existing ones. Furthermore, the new 2020 Jeep Wrangler will have more colors in the palette. Again, this offer depends again on which trim level you pick. The base SUV comes with the lowest number of paintjobs. Rubicon trim has unique graphics, for example.
When Does The 2020 Jeep Wrangler Come Out?
The new 2020 Jeep Wrangler is not taking too many changes. So, the company could bring it earlier than fans expect. On the other hand, the spotlight is on the new Gladiator truck, so FCA will definitely give the advantage to it, over all other models in its lineup.
The price depends on the model and trim level. The base MSRP of this mid-size 4×4 SUV will be $28,000. Sport S adds around $3,500, and Sahara and Rubicon will cost $10k more than the entry-level vehicle.
