The comeback of the Grand Wagoneer hit a few delays in the last ten years. The first official announcement happened in 2011. The plan was to build a seven-seat SUV. However, after that, the FCA was silent about the legendary vehicle. Rumors started swirling again in 2015 and 2016. The final word was the SUV is coming in 2019, but we see another delay. This time, it is not for too long, since the 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is likely to happen. Eventually, it can become a 2021 YM.
The 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is coming back after 29 years. The company discontinued it after building it on the same platform for – 29 years. No other vehicle kept the same architecture for such a long time. The new Grand Wagoneer will be the big SUV and it will join Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Its closest siblings will help it in initial years. It is certain that the upcoming model is going to be a seven-seater. Besides that, we don’t have too many official clues.
Short History
Grand Wagoneer was one of the most popular utility vehicles in its prime. Unique graphics and colors made it eye-catching. On the other hand, its size was very practical for carrying a lot of cargo. Powerful engines supported high towing capacities in that time. The SUV was originally a limited edition of the standard Wagoneer. However, shortly it was renamed and lasted until 1991. Ever since its arrival, the Grand Wagoneer was more successful than its sibling. But, the oil crisis in 1990 took a charge and the vehicle was one of the most famous victims.
Revival – What is the 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer?
Now, we are on the verge of the comeback. It is just a matter of day when the 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer will become official. However, production is not starting immediately. From what we can hear until this day, the Grand Wagoneer is going to be a seven-seat SUV. We can also confirm the new Grand Cherokee will offer the same number of seating spots from next year.
Two other details are unveiling where 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer will be positioned. It is going to be larger than Grand Cherokee and it takes the spot in the full-size segment. But, it is an upscale model that is about to compete against premium Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.
Possible Engines
There are no too many doubts about the powertrain range for the 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. The big rig is getting a V8, that is for sure. However, the FCA offers two big engines – a 5.7-liter and 6.4-liter displacements. Both are already available for high-end trim levels of Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Grand Wagoneer will need a lot of power, so do not be surprised if the SUV steps on the market with 475 hp-rated 6.4-liter Hemi unit. Well, Cadillac Escalade is dropping 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque from its V8, while Lincoln Navigator bursts 450 hp from a twin-turbo V6.
The other option is a diesel. FCA is delivering the Cummins engine for its big truck, Ram 1500. With a similar size, the 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer diesel is possible. A 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine is capable to produce 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. However, it is not available yet for purchase. EPA is still testing its gas emissions.
2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Trackhawk
The new full-size SUV could follow the steps of its closest sibling, Grand Cherokee. The 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Trackhawk would be the most exclusive model in the lineup. The highlight of this badge is a unique drivetrain that delivers 707 horsepower. If the Grand Wagoneer lands in the premium segment, this version will be a rival to the ultra-luxurious, high-performance editions by German carmakers – BMW X7M and Mercedes AMG GLS.
2020 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Cherokee Wagoneer
We will analyze more options since nothing is confirmed yet. The 2020 Grand Wagoneer could be a version of the standard Wagoneer, again. The other SUV is also on the way, but we have less info about it. Definitely, it will be a smaller unit. Since FCA has two mid-size vehicles, Wagoneer could be the premium version of Grand Cherokee. It is not impossible to see it as 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Wagoneer as well.
Spy Photos, Production
Last year a spy photo appeared on the internet, claiming it is a future Grand Wagoneer. We can’t confirm or deny this theory. From the uncovered part of the body, we can see it is a new Jeep SUV. Still, details, besides the seven-slot radiator grille, are unavailable.
We know the new 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer will be built at Jefferson North Assembly Plant. Dodge Durango will create some space for the new SUV since it is moving to the body on frame platform and it is going to be produced at other plants.
Release Date, Price
The release date for the new 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is set for next year. However, there is still a chance of missing the next season and arrive as the 2021 year model. We can only speculate about the price of the new model. It depends on engines the company chooses and its premium/non-premium status. If the Grand Wagoneer is going to be the luxury model, then expect the price of at least $75,000. As said, the Trackhawk version will be a rival to the high-end premium SUVs, which cost over $120,000.
