In the mid-size 3-row class we will find many interesting models. But, which one to buy, it is up to our preferences. The brand-new Subaru Ascent crossover has a small engine. This could be an advantage for someone. On the other hand, Honda Pilot is the most expensive. That could mean there is the quality. Toyota Highlander offers a hybrid drivetrain and Nissan Pathfinder is also a very good option if you need an all-around crossover.
Price
The new 2019 Subaru Ascent will cost from $32,000. Although it is a new vehicle, it ranks pretty expensively right from the start. The 2019 Toyota Highlander will cost slightly over this mark. Honda Pilot and Nissan Pathfinder will remain just shy of this mark in a new season. So, in this battle, there is no big difference in price for entry-level trims. Whatsoever, high-ends are not so close. The most expensive Piot SUV costs $50,000, Pathfinder is even over, while the premium models of Highlander and Ascent will cost between $40,000 and $45,000.
Performance
Subaru Ascent and Toyota Highlander will offer an inline-four engine for the base models. Other two vehicles come straight with a V-6. In the matter of fact, Honda and Nissan are so sure in their 3.5-l units, they will be the sole options. Pilot returns 280 hp, 4 horses less than its rival, and 262 lb-ft of torque, 3 pound-feet more. Turbocharged 4-cylinder unit for Ascent returns 260 horses and 277 lb-ft. Highlander goes from the least capable crossover (185 hp with I-4) to the most potent (295 with a V-6). Finally, in 2018, Toyota was the only company to deliver hybrid crossover. Plug-in Pilot is on the way.
Updates
When we talk about the look of each vehicle, we must be subjective. The 2019 Subaru Ascent is the newest vehicle, with modern lines and solutions. However, other models are also leaders in the segment. It is impossible to be there without an attractive appearance.
Honda started a new generation of its Pilot crossover in 2016. Ever since, they haven’t facelifted it or brought major changes. The vehicle is getting old and the first update could happen soon, maybe even in 2019. Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Highlander started their latest generations in 2013. The first one had a big facelift in 2017. A year before, Highlander was redesigned. These two are still fresh, and new generations are not coming before 2020.
Weaknesses
All of these crossovers are offering modern systems and equipment. However, the weakness of the Nissan Pathfinder could be its space. Other vehicles can take up to 8 passengers, while this SUV is a 7-seater. Honda is not so generous with safety features for the base model of Pilot. Adding these will raise the price, and we can find some of that equipment in other models. Toyota Highlander is not the best vehicle if you want to tow or go off the road. In its higher trim levels, with a V-6 engine, it becomes much better. However, the price raises also. The 2019 Subaru Ascent still needs to prove itself. The crossover needs successful first run to lure buyers. If it manages to make an impact, the future of the model is guaranteed.
