It is sometimes funny how GMC and Chevy vehicles look the same. They don’t call them “GM Twins” for no reason. The 2020 GMC Yukon and its closest sibling, Chevy Tahoe, are sharing a lot of in common. Not only the look and engines but also the history. At the same time, these two full-size SUVs succeeded their predecessors. Ever since 1991, they are developed simultaneously. The same pattern is happening in 2020.
It is time for a mid-cycle redesign after 2019 Yukon brought minor changes. The next SUV will update colors, special editions, and body styles. The 2020 GMC Yukon Denali will be top of the class model again. The SLT model is relatively new. One of the surprise additions could be the 2020 Yukon Hybrid. This is more serious than just a rumor since company officials gave few hints in the last couple of months. This is definitely happening, but we are unsure if that is in plans for 2020.
What Will 2020 GMC Yukon Look Like?
The huge 2020 GMC Yukon SUV will not change its appearance too much. At least, we can see no big changes in the new Tahoe, spied on testing. Twins are sharing most of the updates. So, without modifications of Chevy’s SUV, there are no adjustments on the base Yukon.
We don’t believe that changes on the Chevy Silverado truck, the base for all full-size SUVs by the GM, will be implemented so soon. However, the 2020 GMC Yukon will use the new T1XX body-on-frame architecture. But, it essentially is not changing too much until the SUV hits the new generation. Dimensions and body styles will be similar and fans will get the most from Denali trim.
Spy Photos
Chevy Tahoe is being spied a few times already. However, we can’t know what the camo is hiding. The shape doesn’t show anything special. Other details are not certain yet since the company can change them pretty easily.
We know the new Tahoe is going to use the independent rear suspension. Cadillac Escalade is getting it as well. So, there is no way that 2020 GMC Yukon and Chevy Suburban could use the old suspension. This move is caused by the competition. Ford Expedition and its premium version, Lincoln Navigator, are already taking advantages of the IRS system.
Driving will be easier. The new Yukon will take all the benefits from the independent rear suspension and its handling.
New Colors
Besides these inner updates, the new 2020 GMC Yukon will present new colors. Both interior and exterior refresh will start from the palette. We already used to black and white variants. Now, the new Yukon will introduce other variants for its full-size SUV.
2020 GMC Yukon Body Style
The first thing you will have to choose for your GMC Yukon 2020 model is the body style. There is a standard full-size SUV, its extended version coming as 2020 GMC Yukon XL, and top of the range Denali trim. Well, there are some rumors about a two-door version for Chevy Tahoe. Unconfirmed for this one, we won’t consider it seriously for Yukon either.
The XL vehicle is longer than the standard SUV. It adds 20 inches over the base model. Overall length is 224.5 inches, compared to 204 inches for the 2020 Yukon. Other dimensions are the same, including height and width.
2020 GMC Yukon Denali and Release Date
The best and the most luxurious version of the SUV will appear as 2020 GMC Yukon Denali. At this point, we don’t have so many info about it. Well, it is not easy to predict features for such a vehicle, since it is using the latest technology. In a year or so, we can’t know what will be invented. But, premium leather and genuine stitches will make interior so comfortable and luxurious. You won’t have questions if the vehicle is Denali version since its badges will be all over the vehicle.
Premium paints and 22-inch wheels are highlights of the exterior. The new 2020 GMC Yukon Denali will get more upgrades to prove its value. The Denali model costs $20,000 more than the standard SUV. But, we believe it is worthy of purchase since premium models in this class cost $10,000 more.
Graphite Edition
A brand-new Graphite Edition is part of the refresh for 2019 season. However, the public accepted it well, so it won’t be a surprise to see it again as a part of the 2020 GMC Yukon redesign. Actually, there are two models – standard and performance. Both are based on the SLT model. Additions are blacked out details, special paintjobs, monochromic appearance, and special surroundings for fog lamps and grille.
Two significant additions for Performance package of the 2020 GMC Yukon Graphite Edition will be 22-inch wheels and a 6.2-liter engine, parts we can find on Denali model.
2020 GMC Yukon Specs
Drivetrain lineup of the 2020 GMC Yukon will follow its truck sibling. The SUV is available with a 5.3-liter V8 unit, the same one GMC Sierra 1500 is using. With this drivetrain, Yukon can count on 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Denali version is upgrading this to 420 hp and 460 pound-feet of twist from a 6.2-liter engine. A 10-speed automatic transmission is standard again.
GMC Yukon Diesel Coming in 2020
Again, we must mention GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevy Silverado 1500 trucks. These vehicles are getting a diesel engine for the next season. With the 2020 GMC Yukon based on popular pickups, the SUV can count on such drivetrain sooner or later. Still, engines are waiting for a green light from EPA. As soon as 2019 truck models step into the US market, the GM will start installing diesel units into its SUVs.
2020 GMC Yukon Hybrid
This is still a far-fetched story, but can you imagine the GMC Yukon full-size SUV appearing as a hybrid? Well, the largest vehicle in this class with such drivetrain is Toyota Highlander. But, no big gun is still out with hybrid configuration. Plans for Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator are there, but again, everything depends on trucks, which are first to get hybrid engines.
