The new 2020 GMC Terrain is not going to change too much. The company will pay more attention to the Acadia mid-size SUV. However, the compact model is getting some updates, and the major one will be in the mechanic room. The diesel engine will offer only a front-wheel drive. The reason behind dropping an all-wheel drive is poor sales. However, the AWD stays an option for a petrol engine. Besides this, the new Terrain compact crossover SUV will come unchanged.
Small interior updates are not big. So, we will still have three engines to choose from. A couple of gasoline units are 1.5 and 2.0. Both are four-cylinder and turbocharged. The last option remains a 1.6-l turbodiesel. Four trim levels are available – SL, SLE, SLT, and top of the line Denali model. The last package will come with special equipment and its drivetrain is exclusively a 2.0 petrol unit. The price won’t jump thanks to minor upgrades.
Drivetrains
Under the bonnet of the 2020 GMC Terrain will lay a 1.5-liter turbo-four unit as the base engine. It is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission that sends power to front wheels. Optional AWD setup consumes slightly more fuel. The entry-level engine is capable to return 28 mpg combined with FWD and 26 mpg with AWD. It also creates 170 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. Its bigger sibling, 2.0 unit, adds 80 horsepower and 60 pound-feet. The same transmission and drive setup are available for this unit. Higher outputs result in increased fuel consumption.
The best fuel economy and torque level are coming from a 1.6-liter turbodiesel drivetrain. Still, it can produce only 137 hp, but the twist jumps to 240 lb-ft. Diesel will consume the least fuel, making the 2020 GMC Terrain go 28/39 mpg in city/highway. However, a vehicle for the next season is not going to offer an AWD due to slow sales. A six-speed automatic gearbox works fine with a turbodiesel engine.
2020 GMC Terrain Interior Accessories, Trim Levels
The 2020 GMC Terrain Denali will offer the most. But, it is the high-end crossover that costs $12,000 more than the base model. The entry-level package is SL. It brings a 1.5-liter engine only. The leather steering wheel and 3.5-inch driver info screen are standard. Also, this package offers a 7-inch touchscreen display and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
With SLE and SLT trims engine choice is included. All three units are available for combining. Compared to the base SL, the SLE adds only a few accessories but includes many others as optional. On the other side, the SLT is packed with most of these features. An 8-inch screen with optional navigation, heated front buckets, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, and power outlet are part of GMC Terrain SLT’s interior.
The 2020 GMC Terrain Denali adds even more. It is a unique package that will come with a 2.0 engine and navigation. Rear park assistant and Alert Package I are also part of the offer. If you opt for the Denali model, you will also get a hands-free power liftgate, chrome details around the crossover, 19-inch wheels, and LED headlamps.
Dimensions and Cargo Volume
The new 2020 GMC Terrain will have the same dimensions as its predecessor. The compact crossover is 183 inches long with a 107-in wheelbase. Total weight is just over 3,300 pounds. Inside the cabin, there are 63 cubic feet of cargo space with the second row folded. Behind the rear seats, cargo volume drops to 30 cubic feet.
2020 GMC Terrain Black Edition
Only Terrain and Acadia will bring special upgrades for the SLE and SLT packages. The 2020 GMC Terrain Black Edition boosts the appearance with special colors and details. Black 19-inch wheels, darkened grille with glossy finishes and HID headlamps are standard. Buyers will choose between the existing five paintjobs and two new color options. This is a big upgrade, although standard SLE and SLT trims are offering a lot of choices. The base SL trim is available with base white, and only two more paintjobs. A two-tone interior is elegant and stylish.
When Does 2020 GMC Terrain Come Out?
The new 2020 GMC Terrain will come by the end of this year. The company is not preparing too many updates, so there is no reason for the holdup. The new crossover SUV won’t have a big premiere since the major change is the drop of the AWD for diesel configuration. During next season we will learn more about the hybrid drivetrain which is not available yet.
Price
The base 2020 GMC Terrain will cost $27,000. It is slightly higher than we used to see compact crossovers. However, this SUV will offer a real deal right from the start. Well, we would avoid an SL trim, and move right from the SLE. This upgrade costs $3,000. The SLT costs $32,000, AWD upgrade increases the price by $1,600-$1,800, while the larger engine will bump the price for another $2,000 to $3,000. The price for the Diesel SLE model is $33,000 and Diesel SLT $35,000. Top of the class Denali version will start above $40k.
