We already know the Korean company has a lot of fans already. However, Hyundai is not lacking ambitions. The carmaker already made an impact in crossover market with its Tucson and Santa Fe. We were listening to rumors about other models coming pretty soon, even including pickup truck. Well, one of the most interesting stories was about the vehicle that will compete with Toyota Land Cruiser. Ladies and gentlemen, this is becoming a truth! The new 2020 Genesis GV80 is out on streets.

This was faster than anyone expected. The growth of Hyundai is incredible, and the company is not only producing more existing vehicles, but they are developing new ones. One of them is 2020 Genesis GV80. The first appearance the vehicle had two years ago, at New York Auto Show. Now, it is almost ready for production. Surely, the model we will see by the end of the year is not going to be the same as the prototype presented in 2017. Still, this will make Hyundai even a more serious contender in crossover and SUV class. But, let’s see what we know so far about the new GV80.

The last time we saw the 2020 Genesis GV80 SUV it carried heavy camouflage. No too many things are visible on the prototype, but it definitely confirms the development of the production model. Still, GV80 looks far away from the SUV we will see on the streets. Headlights are very similar to those we saw in New York. Similar, not the same. Double lamps on the front fascia, a net grille, and huge air intakes are highlights of the spied SUV. We could see the same features drawing attention on the concept vehicle.

The rear end seems to have some kind of an upgrade. Well, the first time we saw the Genesis GV80, it had extended back. Still, designers are changing things there. It is obvious that the test mule is not carrying double slim taillights. Also, the styling of a bumper is going to make the SUV even more aggressive.

When Will Genesis GV80 Be Available?

The release date of the 2020 Genesis GV80 is not set yet. Well, the company should come out with an official statement about it. Well, only two years after its unveiling the SUV could be presented as the production model very soon. Hyundai could come back to the same place where the concept debuted. However, the sales won’t start until the last quarter of 2019, or even early 2020.

Price

The price of the new GV80 SUV is an even greater mystery. We don’t know what does the company plans with it. Rumors about the new vehicle that will rival Land Cruiser could give us lead. But, to start its career in the premium segment with the most expensive model, is just crazy. Toyota’s vehicle costs $85,000. Well, the GV80 could start at a lower price, while the upper trim levels could reach this mark. Another detail we must wait to become official.

We already mentioned that the rear end of the 2020 Genesis GV80 is extended. That means the SUV could be a three-row model. Latest news from Hyundai is backing up these speculations. As such, the GV80 will offer seven or eight seats. Well, sloping roof tells everyone that passengers in the last row won’t have as much headroom as these in front of them.

As a luxury SUV, the GV80 will have to raise everything we can see in Hyundai’s siblings to the next level. Premium materials for seats, dashboard, and upholstery are required. The Korean company will add more features and systems to improve overall comfort. Premium details should add some sportier appearance since we will definitely see the very aggressive exterior.

The 2020 Genesis GV80 will share the drivetrains with its stablemates with Hyundai badge. Experts are sure that the 3.8-liter engine is going to be the base choice. The output of this powertrain depends on setup and we can see other Genesis models delivering 300-350 hp and 290-300 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It should be available through the entire lineup. Rear- and all-wheel are options for drive mode.

More power comes from a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6. This time around, owners of the SUV will count on more than 350 hp. The same engine is an alternative in Genesis G80 sedan. Well, these two vehicles will share a lot of things. Total torque for this unit is 375 lb-ft.

Finally, top of the class models will use a 5.0-liter V8 engine. With 383 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, the 2020 Genesis GV80 can definitely call itself a competitor of the Land Cruiser. Toyota’s premium SUV can deliver 381 hp and 400 lb-ft from its 5.7-l V8 engine. Fuel economy is also on Genesis’ side since the V8 engine returns 18/23 mpg in a sedan. Of course, the SUV will be heavier, but it is not going to harm the gas mileage. Land Cruiser will definitely consume much more fuel. It returns 13/18 mpg. Still, we will see if GV80 can match LC’s off-road skills.
