Big changes are on the way for next couple of editions of Chevy Suburban. In 2019 we could see it with a diesel engine. After Silverado 1500 truck got it, we expected such outcome. But, the most recent spy photos are confirming something else. The 2020 Chevy Suburban is spied with independent rear suspension. We already wrote about Cadillac Escalade for 2020 and its changes. It seems like some parts will be shared between these two models.
While the updates on Cadillac Escalade are part of the new generation, the 2020 Chevy Suburban stays in the current. However, the vehicle can expect a redesign during 2019 or 2020. The big overhaul includes completely new drive system. The IRS – independent rear suspension is part of it for sure. If we had any doubts, spy shots will remove any suspicions. Well, that is not all for Suburban SUV, since we can spot some stylish tweaks and options the current vehicle is not offering.
2020 Chevy Suburban Is Moving To IRS System
Ford sets the challenge. The Blue Oval company started using an independent rear suspension for their big guns. Both Ford Expedition and its luxury edition, Lincoln Navigator, dropped solid axle. These SUVs took advantage over the competition with better performance, handling at the first place.
Whatsoever, General Motors always have responses to challenges from its rivals. This time we didn’t wait too long to check out the new 2020 Chevy Suburban with IRS. The recipe is the same – instead of the solid axle on rear wheels, we are getting an independent suspension.
Benefits
For the average driver, this will mean a lot. Professionals can feel every detail. Here we can again check out similarities with trucks and rivals. Ford is using similar platform for F-150 pickup and Expedition SUV. In GM is the very similar situation between Silverado and Suburban. Well, the truck has the original T1 concept, while the crossover modifies it. That allowed the 2020 Chevy Suburban to install the independent suspension to its rear axle. The truck is still using a solid axle.
Handling is the key here. Much better response and mobility of the crossovers meet general attributes of these kinds of vehicles. Well, trucks are more of a working machine, while SUVs are not there to tow a lot of cargo but to transport passengers safely and comfortably.
2020 Chevy Suburban Diesel
Besides the IRS, the mid-cycle refresh brings other changes. One of them is a diesel engine. While rear suspension remains the same for Silverado 1500, the truck is coming into 2019 season with new powertrain lineup. Among them is a Duramax diesel unit, which produces 250 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The full-size SUV, 2020 Chevy Suburban diesel is going to use the same mill as the light-duty truck. However, the independent rear suspension makes a different setup. Also, a 10-speed auto gearbox will bring better and smoother gear shifting, and with it, more pleasant ride.
2020 Chevy Suburban Redesign
Before the news about changes in the engine room, we knew that 2020 Chevy Suburban will get a redesign. Now, spy shots are confirming these stories. The new look will be part of the mid-cycle refresh, while the new generation is not coming before 2022. Until then, we will have to accept new things on Suburban, including driving habits.
2020 Chevy Suburban Price
The crossover will keep its base price at the very high level. Standard offer that includes LS trim and petrol engine will cost around $55,000. Upper trim level LT adds $3,000 and Premier model is above $65,000. The new IRS is not going to boost the value of the 2020 Chevy Suburban. Well, the crossover must be competitive with its main rivals. Diesel engine is another consequence of the offer in the market. However, models with such powertrain will cost $3,000-$5,000 more than the standard petrol trim levels.
