The 2020 Chevy Blazer could be the return of the season. But, the company will do another step. The SS version is going to join Camaro model, as an only performance-oriented vehicle in the lineup. Well, we could see some other models with this badge as well, but the Blazer is the first one to get a special tuning. After the revisit, it will offer 500 horsepower. The standard version will keep both four- and six-cylinder engines with outputs 195-305 hp.
Chevrolet positioned Blazer in the mid-size segment. Well, there is already Traverse as a three-row model. The 2020 Chevy Blazer will be a smaller and sportier SUV. With seating for five persons, there is more space for cargo. For the next season, there won’t be too many changes to the base model. Upper trim levels will get new features, but again, modifications are minor. Definitely, the major addition is the Blazer SS. Finally, the company is considering a hybridization of the next crossover SUV.
2020 Chevy Blazer SS With 500 Horsepower is Possible
Under the hood of the 2020 Chevy Blazer SS would be a 500-hp rated engine. Well, the only drivetrain capable to make such output is 6.0-liter V8, available for Corvette. Another possible SS model is Trailblazer, so it will be interesting to see if General Motors is going to give another chance to its Super Sport department. Well, huge investments are needed. The 2020 Blazer SS would be a unique vehicle in many ways. Special body upgrades and engine tuning also need time. With the company still quiet about this model, we doubt the Blazer could get an SS badge until the end of 2020.
Off-Road 2020 Blazer ZR2
So, what are other alternatives to the Blazer SS? The carmaker could develop its next edition in another way. Instead of a performance-tuned street model, the 2020 Chevy Blazer ZR2 would be an off-road SUV. This badge is already available for Colorado mid-size truck. Silverado 1500 should get a similar package next year.
The bad thing is that 2020 Chevy Blazer will use a unibody platform. For the best off-road performance, the SUV would need a body-on-frame concept. Well, GM is not changing the architecture after just one season. On the other hand, adding off-road parts to the vehicle that can’t get maximum of these is also debatable. Yes, the Blazer ZR2 would give another option, but it can’t fulfill the expectations of buyers looking for the mean off-road SUV.
2020 Chevy Blazer Specs
While we are waiting for the company to confirm the SS model of 2020 Chevy Blazer, the standard offer of the SUV will still use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine as the base drivetrain. This unit is capable to produce 193 hp and 188 lb-ft of torque. The base setup also includes a nine-speed auto transmission that sends power to front wheels. If you want an AWD, you will have to upgrade the engine room with a V6 powertrain. This intelligent system will cut the rear wheel driveline when it is not needed.
A 3.6-liter V6 engine is producing 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. The same transmission is a power router. A bigger rig consumes more fuel. A V6 returns 23 mpg combined, while the four-pot gives 25 miles per gallon. All-wheel drive is even less fuel-friendly, with ratings 18/25 mpg for city-highway. The towing capacity of the 2020 Blazer remains 4,500 pounds. The vehicle offers 64 cubic feet of storage area behind front seats.
Trim Levels, Noteworthy Equipment
The new mid-size SUV didn’t introduce any new versions. The vehicle is available with cloth upholstery. If you opt for a V6 engine, you can purchase the leather interior. High-end models are RS and Premier. Chevrolet is already using these two trim levels. Well, we would like to see either ZR2 or SS next year as well. An eight-inch display is the standard equipment for the infotainment system. More safety features are added with every upper trim. Leather models are using heating and ventilating function for front seats. The 2020 Chevy Blazer RS will be painted in unique red color, while the interior comes with a lot of accents in the same paint. Premier adds 21-inch wheels as optional to 20-inch rims.
Prices
The base 2020 Chevy Blazer will cost the same as its predecessor. Company’s MSRP is just under $30,000 The cheapest SUV with V6 engine costs $34,500. Upgrading the interior with leather upholstery and seats will be $2,200 more. The RS goes above $41,000 while the Premier is the most expensive Blazer at the moment. Its price starts at $44,000.
Well, both SS or ZR2 models are going to cost over $50,000. The thing is a company is not making any of them official yet. We believe one of these is definitely joining the 2020 Chevy Blazer lineup. Well, the SS model would cost a lot more, probably over $65,000. The ZR2 upgrades are not so expensive, but this SUV would definitely be the top offer in case the SS doesn’t show up.
