The 2020 Acura RDX is the entry-level crossover for the premium Honda’s lineup. The flagship model remains the MDX. Well, the model for 2019 was already out, and we could see the jump in sales in the final months of 2018.

So, what does the 2020 Acura RDX need to do? How to upgrade further the new crossover? The hybrid model is one of the additions for the next season. Also, a revisit of the A-Spec model could bring a more aggressive vehicle. Type S will be even more appealing with the new engine. Could it be a V6? We will see. And what about a manual transmission? Competition

The 2020 Acura RDX belongs to the premium compact crossover class. One of the leaders and models that made this segment so popular is Audi Q5. Well, the German carmaker is paying more attention to its new Q4 crossover, so Q5 is not getting major upgrades. Of course, there is another German carmaker with its product. BMW X4 will debut with new features and probably more engines. Japanese competitors are Lexus NX and Infiniti QX50. The first one comes with a hybrid drivetrain, while the other one is upgrading its self-driving ProPilot system. The success of Cadillac XT5 made GM expand the XT-lineup. The crossover is getting a smaller sibling, XT4, which will be interesting to watch.

2020 Acura RDX Specs

One major change is underpinning the new generation of the 2020 Acura RDX. Engineers replaced a V6 engine with a turbo-four drivetrain. Well, the larger displacement could come back, especially knowing its durability. However, the new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine can produce nearly the same energy. A four-pot unit is creating 272 hp, only 7 horsepower less than the V6. At the same time, it bursts 30 pound-feet more, for total torque of 280 lb-ft. The smaller block is also more efficient. Highway ratings are the same as before (27-28 mpg), while it consumes less fuel in urban areas. Of course, buyers can opt for an all-wheel drive if FWD is not meeting their requirements. Better handling and balance are definitely a pro for this version.

Hybrid, Manual Transmission, V6

Rumors about the 2020 Acura RDX are reporting that the hybrid engine is on the way. As a part of the update, this drivetrain would make the RDX more competitive. Infiniti and Lexus rivals are already in the market with hybrids. Other companies are also working on it. Honda, Acura’s parent company, launched CR-V with a hybrid drivetrain. Well, in Europe. But, US buyers don’t have to worry since the crossover is getting it in 2020. Its premium version as well.

On the other hand, fans of the V6 engine were very disappointed with the decision to discontinue their favorite mill. But, the possibility of a comeback is tiny, at least as the one we knew (read more below). The manual transmission was cut after the first generation, and it is also hard to believe the company will return it. However, we could see some special version of the 2020 Acura RDX with a manual gearbox.

Acura RDX Exterior Dimensions

After the redesign in 2019, the compact crossover got new dimensions. The vehicle is now 187 inches long. That is 3 inches more than the previous generation. Also, the wheelbase is longer, but only by 2 inches. The 2020 Acura RDX will have 108 inches of wheelbase. The crossover is also higher than before 66 in compared to 64 in.

2020 Acura RDX A Spec

The 2020 Acura RDX A Spec is a special edition of the crossover with cosmetic upgrades. This model will use the same drivetrain as the base vehicle. However, the exterior and interior are getting more features for an appealing look. Outside, these are 19-inch wheels and dark trims. Larger exhaust tips and sportier bumper are adding some aggressiveness.

Inside, the A Spec version of the RDX uses more wood and aluminum. However, the new instrument panel is the highlight. Unique design will be totally different with special gauges. Optionally, red leather seats could be installed. Colors are cooler.

Type S with V6 Engine

Type S is the badge for performance models by Acura. However, we haven’t seen any new vehicle with an upgraded engine. However, the company announced that few models will be available with this badge by next season. One of the vehicles is 2020 Acura RDX Type S. Also, the carmaker stated that all Type S models will get a new V6 engine. Unfortunately, that is all they said. A super-handling all-wheel drive will be part of the drivetrain system, as well as the turbocharger. Experts believe a six-speed manual transmission is a likely option for buyers who can’t wait to see 2020 Acura RDX Type S.
